Dr. Doom: 1940, Science Comics #1 (Fox). Like his latter day namesake, this fiendish mad scientist had schemes that knew no bounds, in efforts to set himself up as dictator of Earth. His favorite invention was a shrinking ray that he'd use to pit man against insect. The series was a bit schizophrenic. In several adventures, the stories seemed to take place in some unspecified future. Here, his opponents were Jan Swift and Wanda, human denizons of Jupiter. However, he also fought a World War ace pilot named Steele assigned to stop him by the FBI in what appeared to be modern day Earth, looking a little different. Steele calls him an "old friend" suggesting they had fought each other before in an unpublished story. Another adventure had him fighting off various forces of a futuristic America where it was specified his lab was on the rim of the Grand Canyon. He often wore loose fitting clothes and a cape, but depending on the artist, he would look a little differently. Jan and Wanda eventually became more standard aviators and take on a more mundane job as reporters for the “Daily Star” with a news editor named “Mr. Lane". I love the one panel below that looks like a take-off of "The Scream".
